The Southwestern Maine Activities Association has canceled its cross country relays today because of the oppressive heat.

The event will not be rescheduled.

“There was a concern among the coaches about the heat and the air quality,” said Gary Stevens, athletic director at Thornton Academy in Saco, which was to host the meet. “There is a heat alert and an air quality alert. So we decided to scrap it.”

Falmouth High officials alerted their coaches that they could practice today, but limit the practices to one hour.

Weather is also affecting other athletic events. With Hurricane Earl coming up the East Coast, several schools have already moved their Saturday afternoon football games to Friday. Kennebunk will play at Thornton Academy and Gorham will play at Cheverus, both at 1 p.m.

Other schools have adjusted their times on Saturday, waiting to see exactly what path the storm takes.
