AUGUSTA — Police throughout Maine are continuing their stepped-up drunken driving enforcement efforts over the Labor Day weekend.

According to the Maine State Police, 78 police departments are sharing $545,000 in federal funding to pay for the overtime costs of extra patrols on the lookout for impaired drivers. The campaign began Aug. 20.

Officials say the crackdown in Maine coincides with a national campaign — Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. — that aims to get drunk drivers off the road.

State police also plan to have extra troopers patrolling the roads during the holiday weekend looking for aggressive and impaired drivers.
