BOOTHBAY, Maine (AP) — Bigelow Laboratory is breaking ground for its permanent home in East Boothbay along the Maine coast.
A ceremony is planned for Tuesday at the site of the Bigelow Center for Blue Biotechnology, the first building on the laboratory’s new, 64-acre ocean research and education campus. More than 200 people are expected to attend and U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, will speak.
The laboratory has received $4.5 million from the Maine Technology Asset Fund for the new center and anticipates occupying the center in November of next year.
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences research ranges from microbial oceanography to large-scale processes that drive interactions between ocean ecosystems and global environmental conditions. Its work has taken Bigelow scientists around the world to every ocean and the polar seas.
