AUBURN — A man who was evicted from his apartment in Auburn will serve at least two years in prison after pleading guilty to setting the building on fire.

Twenty-two-year-old Randen Schmidt of Greene pleaded guilty to arson Thursday in Androscoggin County Superior Court. According to a plea agreement, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but 2½ years suspended. He also must complete four years of probation and undergo substance abuse counseling.

The Lewiston Sun Journal reports Schmidt could have faced up to 30 years in prison stemming from the April 30 fire.

A family of four escaped the fire unharmed, but the building had heavy smoke and water damage.
