PORTLAND— Today on the 223rd anniversary of the signing of the U. S. Constitution forty-one new citizens will take oaths as Americans in a Portland courtroom.

U.S. Magistrate Judge John Rich III will swear in the new citizens in federal court. Patriotic music will be provided by the Portland High School Orchestra, and the South Portland Police Department Honor Guard will lead the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Constitution Day ceremony also features Richard Bastow, a representative of the Maine Chapter of the Mayflower Society, who will present each new citizen with a copy of the Mayflower Compact. Virginia Cooney of the Daughters of the American Revolution will present each new citizen with an American flag. The new citizens will also get voter registration cards.
