The Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences has been awarded a $4.9 million grant toward its new campus now under construction in East Boothbay.

The grant was made by the National Science Foundation for the laboratory’s Center for Ocean Biogeochemistry and Climate Change.

The money was part of the federal economic stimulus program.

The center will include 7,000 square feet of laboratory space for gas chromatography, organic, nutrient and trace metals analyses and other research that focuses on the role of plankton in the relationship between the world’s oceans and climate change.

The grant is in addition to a $4.45 million award for new campus construction from the Maine Technology Asset Fund.
