PORTLAND — Local comedian Bob Marley will attempt to break the Guiness World Record for the longest stand-up comedy performance by an individual.

Marley’s quest begins Wednesday morning at 7  a.m. at the Comedy Connection, 16 Custom House Wharf, in Portland.

Under Guiness rules, Marley, who lives in Falmouth, will need to entertain an audience of at least 10 people until 11 p.m. Thursday night, a stretch of about 40 hours. In order for Marley to break the record, audience members will need to remain awake during his performance.

The previous record for a stand-up comedy routine is 38 hours and six minutes, set in October 2009 by Lindsay Webb of Australia.

All proceeds will benefit the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center.
