BANGOR — A Bangor woman has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to charges she sexually assaulted a man and poured scalding water on his back, severely burning him.

Twenty-eight-year-old Laura M. Smith was sentenced today to 18 years with all but six years suspended.

She has been held on $50,000 bail since her December arrest on elevated aggravated and gross sexual assault charges.

Court documents say the incident happened after a night of heavy drinking. The 43-year-old victim told police that he had passed out at a party on Nov. 28 and woke up with severe burns on his back and a perforated bowel. He was hospitalized for more than a month.

The Bangor Daily News says Smith today tearfully apologized to the victim, who did not attend the sentencing.
