AUGUSTA — Maine is receiving a federal grant to upgrade electronic birth and death certificate systems and make other public health improvements.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is giving the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention an award of $1.8 million per year for five years to make the improvements.

The funding is to improve the state Health Department’s performance and meet national public health standards.

Seventy-five state and other health departments have been awarded grants.
