PARIS — Prosecutors are recommending a 50-year prison sentence for a Maine man who pleaded guilty in a double killing in Rumford.

Twenty-year-old Eric Hamel of Mexico on Thursday admitted his guilt in the shooting deaths of 48-year-old Roger Day and 22-year-old Victor Sheldon in August 2009. Also facing murder charges is Richard Moulton Jr. of Rumford, who’s scheduled to be tried in February.

Hamel, who prosecutors say was the triggerman, will be required to testify against any others, including Moulton, under a plea agreement.

The Sun Journal newspaper says Hamel told police that he and Moulton met several times to plan the killings and that he agreed to do it for $2,000. Police said Moulton wanted Sheldon killed in a dispute that stemmed from a domestic abuse charge involving his estranged wife, who had begun dating Moulton.
