ORONO – Jocelyn Mitchell scored three goals in the first 15 minutes as the University of Maine cruised to a 6-1 victory over Quinnipiac in a college field hockey game Friday.
Mitchell opened the scoring for the Black Bears (7-2) just 19 seconds into the game on an assist from Stephanie Gardiner, who finished with two goals and one assist.
Courtney Veinotte also scored a goal for the Black Bears, who held a 14-5 advantage in shots against Quinnipiac (2-6).
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
MAINE 7, SACRED HEART 0: Jennie Gallo scored twice and Brittany Dougherty had a goal and two assists to help the Black Bears down the Pioneers in a season opener at Orono.
Dominique Goutsis added a goal and an assist, and Brittany Ott made 19 saves.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
DUKE: The school extended the contract of Coach Joanne P. McCallie three years, through the 2016-17 season.
McCallie, a former UMaine coach, is 82-22 in three seasons at Duke.
