AUGUSTA — Volunteers in 14 Maine communities are picking up trash on private properties to show appreciation to landowners who allow the public to use their lands.

Teams from ATV, snowmobile and sportsmen’s’ clubs will be among those doing the cleanup work today.

The effort is sponsored by the state’s Landowner Relations Program. Director Bob Duplessie says the cleanup day was organized out of concern about landowners restricting access to their properties after people dump trash there.

Nearly two dozen sites identified for cleanup contain household trash, furniture and more than 900 tires.

The communities involved are: Augusta, Winslow, Hampden, Limington, Standish, Sebago, Oxford, Waterford, Waterboro, Millinocket, Orono, Veazie, Old Town and Presque Isle.
