Gov. John Baldacci has issued a statement mourning the death in Afghanistan of a soldier whose father lives Sanford.

The Governor’s Office announced this afternoon that he has received word of the death of Pvt. 1st Class Clinton E. Springer II, 21, who died in Kabul on Friday. The circumstances of his death are under review, the statement said.

Springer served with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry, stationed at Fort Drum, N.Y.

“Pfc. Springer died while serving his country. His loss is a terrible tragedy,” Gov. Baldacci said. “The military men and women serving in Afghanistan are called upon to complete dangerous missions far from home and family. Each and every one of them is a hero worthy of our respect and gratitude.”

Springer’s father lives in Sanford and his mother and brother live in Massachusetts, the governor’s statement said.
