Dr. Peter Morgane, a professor of pharmacology at the University of New England, died Monday at the age of 83 after a brief illness.
In recent years, donations from Morgane funded the Cecile Morgane Research Laboratory at the Pickus Center for Biomedical Research and Peter and Cecile Morgane Hall, the newest academic building on the university’s Biddeford campus.
Morgane was UNE’s largest individual donor, said Director of Marketing and Communications Kathleen Taggersell.
Late Monday night, UNE President Danielle Ripich released a statement about Morgane’s death.
“We mourn the loss of our dear friend, but know that Peter’s legacy of scientific discovery will live on at the University of New England,” Ripich said.
Morgane joined the university in 1985 and was honored as professor emeritus in June. He is noted for publishing more than 230 scientific papers and his work editing the four-volume “Handbook of the Hypothalamus” during his career.
At UNE, Morgane was working with Dr. David Mokler on the emotional brain; together they edited an entire volume of the Journal of Neuroscience and Bio-Behavioral Reviews.
