PORTLAND — A dog taken while his owner was shooting pool in a Free Street bar has been returned after an anonymous tip led police to the woman who took him.

Stephen Osborne, who until recently was homeless, had tied his 10-month-old black lab-pit bull mix to a post outside Matthew’s on Free Street and when he came back out, the dog was gone. Police checked security video and saw that a middle-aged woman had untied the dog and walked off with him.

When police questioned the woman Thursday night, she said she took the dog because she was concerned he wasn’t being cared for adequately, police said. She was not charged.

The dog was in good health, police said, and was reunited with his master.
