Maine Speaker of the House Rep. Hannah Pingree, D-North Haven, has made Time magazine’s list of “40 Under 40: The young pols to watch,” a feature included in the Oct. 25 issue.

The magazine said it selected young rising stars in public service who are already at work trying to restore the public’s shaken faith in government.

“While Maine has a long tradition of formidable female politicians, the Democrat is a star in her own right,” the magazine said.

The magazine quotes the 33-year-old saying youth is not an obstacle: “Once you prove you care about the issue and that you’re smart, you earn your colleagues’ respect,” she said.

Pingree was elected to the Legislature when she was 25 and this year completed her maximum term of eight years. She intends to remain involved in politics but has no immediate plans.

The speaker’s mother, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, is in the midst of a re-election campaign in Maine’s 1st District.

Also this month, the women’s magazine Marie Claire featured Hannah Pingree in its “Women on Top” awards, eight women who are leaders in their fields.
