Dominique Wilkins drew crowds in the 1980s and ’90s with his scoring ability and dazzling dunks on the basketball court. On Wednesday, he got the attention of a crowd of Maine kids with his story of overcoming diabetes. Wilkins, an NBA Hall of Famer whose former teams include the Boston Celtics, came to Portland to speak at the Maine Health Management Coalition’s annual symposium about his experience in the health care system. Wilkins, who was diagnosed with diabetes after he retired from basketball, also spoke to about 30 kids from around the state, all with Type I diabetes. He told them how he struggled with the diagnosis and the disease, but proved that they can live long, active lives if they take care of themselves.
