Students from the Compass Project in Gorham test two 5-foot handmade sailboats near Handy Boat in Falmouth on Friday. High school students in the Compass Project’s boat-building program are preparing for a trans-Atlantic race of four unmanned, GPS-tracked mini-sailboats, competing against vessels from Belfast, Searsport and Mount Desert Island. The boats will be carried on a freighter leaving Searsport in early November, taken to a location in the Caribbean, then launched into the Gulf Stream. The first boat to get within 100 miles of Europe is the winner.
