TREMONT — Medical officials say an elderly Maine couple whose bodies were found in a submerged vehicle near a boat ramp on Mount Desert Island drowned.

Ninety-two-year-old Lewis Lawton and his 86-year-old wife, Inez, were found Tuesday morning in their SUV in waters off the Seal Cove boat landing in Tremont.

An official with the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office told the Bangor Daily News that the cause of death was drowning, but said there has been no determination on the circumstances that led to the deaths.
