Two quarterbacks who led their teams to state football titles, a fullback-linebacker who did the same and a record-setting quarterback are among the candidates for the Fitzpatrick Trophy, awarded to the top senior football player in the state on voting by coaches and the media.

Quarterbacks Peter Gwilym of Cheverus and Cam Kaubris of Mountain Valley led their teams to state titles, as did Nick Proscia, a Yarmouth fullback-linebacker.

Then there’s Jamie Ross, the record-setting quarterback who led Deering to an 8-3 season that ended with a 35-34 loss to Cheverus in the Western Class A final Nov. 13.

The 12 Fitzpatrick Trophy semifinalists were selected by a commitee comprised of members of the Maine chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, and media representatives.

The semifinalists are on a ballot being sent to head coaches in the state and media members.

The three leading vote-getters will be the finalists with the top vote-getter receiving the award.

The names of the finalists will be announced in mid-December.

The Fitzpatrick banquet will be held Jan. 16 at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland.
