There’s nothing like the holidays to bring out the best in people, and Thursday, more than 1,600 runners were bringing out their best in the Thanksgiving Day 4-miler that wound through downtown Portland.

Ethan Shaw of Falmouth, a junior at Dartmouth, was the overall winner in 19 minutes, 44 seconds, eight seconds ahead of Mike Griffin of Marlborough, Mass., the defending champion. Kristin Barry of Scarborough was the women’s champ for the fifth time, in 23:20, eight seconds ahead of Gretchen Chick of Brookline, Mass.

But from first place to No. 1,649, this was more of a day to enjoy the run and then the meal.
