PBC’s Leddy headlines card for New England finals

Liz Leddy leads four members of the Portland Boxing Club into tonight’s finals of the New England USA Boxing Championships at the Stevens Avenue Armory in Portland. Leddy, ranked second among open class lightweights and a 2012 Olympic team hopeful, is matched with fellow amateur Roberta Papas of Haverhill, Mass.

Juan Lopez (novice lightweight), Lindsay Kyajohnian (female novice lightweight) and Christian Castaneda (junior lightweight) also advanced to the finals. Winners in the 14 bouts advance to the regional tournament.

The first bout starts at 8 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. to meet James “Buster” Douglas, the former heavyweight champion.

QMJHL: Sam Carrier broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth round of the shootout to give the Lewiston Maineiacs a 3-2 victory over the Moncton Wildcats at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston.

Carrier fired a shot between the pads of Moncton goaltender Shane Owen, then Thomas Flynn missed on Moncton’s turn.

Michael Chaput and Francis Beauvillier also scored for Maineiacs, winners of 12 of their last 13 games.

Nicholas Champion finished with 34 saves for Lewiston.
