NAPLES — A 12-year-old boy was rescued today by a passer-by after falling through ice on the Muddy River, an inlet off Sebago Lake.
Deborah Turcotte, a spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, said the boy, Curtis Gerrish of Naples, was attempting to run across the ice to an island in the river when he fell through.
The boy became trapped in water up to his chest until a passerby, Jason Guy of Tewksbury, Mass., grabbed a canoe from the riverbank, paddled out to the boy, and pulled him out of the water.
The boy was transported by Naples Fire and Rescue – the lead agency in the rescue – to Bridgton Hospital in Bridgton to be checked out. The incident took place around 12:30 p.m.
Turcotte said the ice is not thick enough anywhere in the state for persons to be walking on frozen surfaces.
