FREEPORT — A school bus hit a pedestrian this morning as it was turning onto Main Street from Nathan Nye Street in the heart of Freeport’s downtown shopping district.

Dr. Shannon Welsh, superintendent of schools for Regional School Unit 5, which includes students from Durham, Freeport and Pownal, said 10 students heading to the Mast Landing Elementary School were onboard the bus when the accident took place around 8:45 a.m.

Welsh said the pedestrian, a woman, was taken to a local hospital where she was treated and released.

Welsh, who boarded the bus to check on the students’ well being, said none of the grade three through five students were injured. No charges will be filed against the driver, she added.

“It was an unfortunate accident. I feel horrible for the pedestrian,” Welsh said.
