PORTLAND — Workers will raise an American flag and a tree on top of the new Hampton Inn this afternoon to symbolize the last beam being set in place on the new building.
The “topping off” ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. at the construction site at Franklin, Fore and Middle streets, the site of the former Jordan Meats plant.
Topping off is a tradition followed by ironworkers to mark the placement of the last beam. In addition to the flag and tree, which symbolizes growth, members of Ironworkers Local 7 will raise a broom, signifying that the construction has been accident-free.
The Hampton Inn is a six-story building and the general contractor is Opechee Construction.
