PORTLAND — Several Maine veterans are again calling on Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe to repeal the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

The Army and Navy veterans were to hold a news conference today as the Senate Armed Services Committee kicks off a hearing on the policy, which has been in place since 1993.

Collins, who’s on the Armed Services Committee, supports allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military. She believes there is still time to consider the Defense Authorization bill, which includes repeal of the policy.

As for Snowe, spokesman John Gentzel says she is studying a report released this week by the Pentagon and wants to hear what “top Pentagon officials and military leaders have to say” before the committee.
