WATERVILLE – Mike Russell surpassed the 1,000-point career milestone as Colby defeated the University of Maine at Farmington 57-47 Thursday night in a men’s basktball game.

Russell, who had 33 points and 19 rebounds, tied Ken Federman for 32nd place in school history with 1,013 points.

The Beavers (1-2) pulled to within 49-45 with 1:45 left, but Christian Van Loenen hit a jumper and Russell followed with a layup and two foul shots to help the White Mules (3-2) preserve the win.

BATES 85, GORDON 37: Brian Ellis scored 16 points and the Bobcats (4-1) opened the second half with a 26-8 run against the Fighting Scots (2-4) at Wenham, Mass.

NEW HAMPSHIRE TI 90, SOUTHERN MAINE CC 87: Josh Mackie led a balanced offense with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, but the Seawolves gave up a 15-point halftime lead and lost at South Portland.

Randall Laing added 14 points, Jim Thyng and Daniel Foster each scored 11, and Coleman Findlay had 10 points for SMCC.

(4) KANSAS 77, UCLA 76: Mario Little hit a free throw with seven-tenths of a second remaining, lifting Kansas (7-0) to a victory over UCLA (3-3) at Lawrence, Kan.

Tyler Honeycutt had 33 points for UCLA, including a 3-pointer with 5 seconds to go that tied the score.

(11) BAYLOR 68, ARIZONA STATE 54: LaceDarius Dunn had 24 points with six 3-pointers and sparked the tie-breaking run after halftime as Baylor (6-0) stretched its home winning streak to 11 games with a victory over Arizona State (3-3).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 58, NEW HAMPSHIRE TI 47: Ariel LeDuc scored 13 points as the Seawolves won at South Portland.

Esther Palmieri added 12 points, including three 3-pointers, and Christina Ricci chipped in 11 for SMCC.

(1) UCONN 80, SOUTH FLORIDA 54: Stefanie Dolson scored 16 points and Connecticut (7-0, 1-0 Big East) upped its overall winning streak to 85 games by beating South Florida (5-3, 0-1) at Tampa, Fla.

The Huskies scored the first 12 points and built a 22-2 lead before USF made its first field goal with just over 9 minutes left in the first half.

(4) XAVIER 69, USC 66: Amber Harris had 28 points and 14 rebounds, helping Xavier (7-0) hold off Southern California (4-3) at Cincinnati.

Ta’Shia Phillips added 20 points and 16 rebounds for Xavier, which is off to a 7-0 start for the second straight season.

(5) DUKE 59, WISCONSIN 51: Jasmine Thomas scored 14 points and Duke (8-0) held off Wisconsin (2-6) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Madison, Wis.

(6) OHIO STATE 74, VIRGINIA 46: Jantel Lavender had 23 points and 13 rebounds, Samantha Prahalis added 14 points and eight assists, and Ohio State (6-0) beat visiting Virginia (4-4) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

(10) WEST VIRGINIA 90, ELON 51: Madina Ali had 20 points and 10 rebounds, Liz Repella added 17 points, and West Virginia (7-0) beat Elon (4-3) at Morgantown, W.Va.

(14) NORTH CAROLINA 79, (18) IOWA 67: Italee Lucas scored 34 points, leading North Carolina (8-0) to a victory over Iowa (7-1) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Chapel Hill, N.C.

(22) MARYLAND 56, PURDUE 55: Lynetta Kizer scored 20 points to help Maryland (6-1) rally past Purdue (4-1) at West Lafayette, Ind.
