LEWISTON – Bates raced to a 41-27 halftime lead and defeated Bowdoin 86-65 Saturday in a men’s basketball game.

Mark Brust had 21 points, Brian Ellis scored 20, and Alex Gallant added 18 points with eight rebounds for the Bobcats (5-1), who won their third straight game.

Will Hanley had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Polar Bears (3-2). Ryan O’Connell and Justin Nowell chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.

BROWN 62, MAINE 54: Peter Sullivan scored eight of his 21 points in the final 2:18 as Brown (4-3) defeated Maine (2-4) at Orono.

Sullivan’s layup with 1:02 remaining broke the game’s sixth tie and put the Bears ahead to stay, 56-54. Sullivan was 4 for 4 from the free-throw line over the final 14 seconds.

Brown led 25-19 with 3:35 left in the first half, but Maine pulled ahead 34-27 with a 15-2 run that spanned halftime.

A 3-pointer by Adrian Williams gave Brown its first lead of the second half, 41-40 at the 12:18 mark.

Murphy Burnatowski led Maine with 15 points, 12 in the first half. Raheem Singleton added 11, with nine in the second half.

COLBY 57, MAINE MARITIME 47: Ben Foreman scored 18 points, and Christian Van Loenen and Mike Russell added 12 each as the Mules (4-2) downed the Mariners (3-3) to advance to the title game of the Colby Invitational at Waterville.

Colby raced to a 12-2 lead and was up 28-16 at halftime.

Shawn Dostie scored 12 points for Maine Maritime.

ST. JOSEPH’S 79, EMERSON 74: Chris Petzy and Tyler Kelley combined for 39 points to lead the Monks (4-1, 1-0 GNAC) past the Lions (3-3, 0-1) Standish.

Nich Jobin scored eight of his 10 points during a 10-3 spurt that gave St. Joseph’s a 66-56 lead with 4:12 remaining.

WESTERN CONN. STATE 88, USM 71: DaQuan Brooks scored 29 points to lead the Colonials (6-1, 1-0 Little East) past the Huskies (5-2, 0-1) at Danbury, Conn.

Sean Bergeron had 14 points for Southern Maine and Corteze Isaac scored 13.

UNE 63, UM-FORT KENT 57: The Nor’easters (2-6) went 8 for 8 from the free-throw line in the final 53 seconds to pull ahead of the Tigers (5-3) and advance to the championship game of the Paul Bunyan Tournament at Bangor.

UNE got 14 points each from Chas Rentrope, Marcus Winn and Ryan Knotek.

VERMONT TECH 103, SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 67: Nick Simpson scored 34 points to lead the Knights over the Seawolves at Randolph Center, Vt.

Josh Mackie scored 15 points on five 3-pointers to pace the Seawolves.

NORTH CAROLINA 75, (10) KENTUCKY 73: Tyler Zeller scored 27 points and hit the go-ahead free throws with 47 seconds left, helping North Carolina (5-3) edge Kentucky (5-2) at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Zeller scored 12 of the final 16 points for the Tar Heels. John Henson added 13 points and 12 rebounds, giving North Carolina its sixth win in the past seven games against Kentucky.

(15) MINNESOTA 71, CORNELL 66: Trevor Mbakwe had 12 points and 16 rebounds, leading the Golden Gophers (7-1) past the Big Red (2-6) at Minneapolis.

(16) GEORGETOWN 68, UTAH STATE 51: Chris Wright had 21 points and Georgetown (8-0) pulled away in the second half to beat Utah State (5-2) at Washington.

The Hoyas forced 15 turnovers, including 12 over a 13-minute span starting late in the first half, and opened the second half with a 17-2 run.

(20) ILLINOIS 73, GONZAGA 61: Demetri McCamey finished with 11 points and seven assists and Illinois (8-1) was 10 of 11 from 3-point range to open the second half, beating Gonzaga (4-3) at Seattle.

(21) BYU 78, HAWAII 57: Jimmer Fredette scored 16 points and sophomore Stephen Rogers added a career-high 13 off the bench to lead BYU (8-0) over Hawaii (5-2) at Salt Lake City.

(22) PURDUE 66, ALABAMA 47: E’Twaun Moore scored 23 points and made 5 of 10 3-pointers to help Purdue (7-1) beat Alabama (4-4) at West Lafayette, Ind.

(23) WASHINGTON 108, TEXAS TECH 79: Justin Holiday had 17 of his career-high 20 points in the first half to lead Washington (5-2) past Texas Tech (5-4) at Seattle.
