PORTLAND – Ben Freeman scored two goals Saturday to lead Falmouth to a 5-3 victory against South Portland in a schoolboy hockey opener at the Portland Ice Arena.

Mitchell Tapley, Brandon Tuttle and Kris Samaras also scored for Falmouth, which held a 34-18 advantage in shots.

Josh Cobb scored on a power play 26 seconds into the game, Nick Whitten added an unassisted goal about nine minutes later and Ryan Gilboy made it 3-3 midway through the third period for South Portland.

GIRLS’ HOCKEY

YORK 2, LEAVITT 0: Rachel Yorke had a goal and an assist, and Olivia Drew stopped nine shots as the Wildcats (5-0) shut out the Hornets (2-1-1) at Rochester, N.H.

Olivia Leroux also scored and Julia Hird assisted on Yorke’s goal.

PORTLAND 4, CAPE /WAYNFLETE 1: Raechel Allen scored twice, and Drew Barry had a goal and two assists to lead the Bulldogs (2-2) against Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete (0-4) at Portland.

Effie Drew also scored for the Bulldogs. Kelsey Jackson answered for Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

ISLESBORO 75, NORTH HAVEN 25: Gerard Scherr had 21 points, seven steals and eight rebounds, and D.J. Johnson finished with 13 points, 11 assists and 11 steals for the Eagles (2-0) against the Hawks (0-2) at North Haven.

Jason Hatch had 14 points, Charlie Gebhardt added 11 and Max Mahan closed with eight for Islesboro.

Zeb Campbell had 13 points and Anthony Rattina added eight for North Haven.

TRAIP ACADEMY 70, GOULD ACADEMY 35: Nathan Westman scored 19 of his 24 points in the first half as the Rangers (1-1) opened a 42-20 lead against the Huskies (0-1) at Kittery.

Matt Clifford added 13 points for Traip.

FOREST HILLS 55, VINALHAVEN 47: Dylan McNally scored 21 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final two minutes, to lead Forest Hills at Vinalhaven.

Evan Worster added 13 points and six assists, and Raymond Petrin had 17 rebounds for the Tigers.

Steven Osgood and Bobby Beckman combined for 31 points for the Vikings.

NYA 43, HEBRON ACADEMY 38: Blair Haggett scored a team-high 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, as the Panthers (1-1) defeated the Lumberjacks (0-1) at Yarmouth.

Eliza Gendron added 11 points and Charlotte Esancy had nine for NYA.

Janelle Bradish scored a game-high 16 points for Hebron.

FRIDAY’S BOYS’ BASKETBALL

SCARBOROUGH 42, GORHAM 23: Zach Bean scored 16 points as the Red Storm won at Gorham.

Zach Spiers led Gorham with eight points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.

FRYEBURG ACADEMY 63, FREEPORT 55: Colby Locke scored 23 points, and Bright Amoako had 17 points and nine assists to lead the Raiders at Fryeburg.

Fryeburg Academy used a 23-13 second-quarter run to open a 34-24 lead.

Chandler Birmingham scored 16 points for Freeport. Kyle Strozewski added 13.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 62, SACOPEE VALLEY 28: Ryheem Lang and Andrew Fleury each scored 11 points for the Seagulls at South Hiram.

Nate Dow and Jason Dutton each added 10 points for Old Orchard, which used a half-court press to force turnovers and build a 26-6 lead after one quarter.

Jeff Taylor had 14 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots for Sacopee.

YORK 64, LAKE REGION 36: Michael King and Aaron Todd scored 18 points apiece for the Wildcats, who held Lake Region to 13 second-half points at York.

Kevin Gilson led Lake Region with 16 points.

FALMOUTH 48, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 30: Alex Cattell finished with 12 points and six rebounds, and Matt Kingry added 11 points to lead the Yachtsmen at Falmouth.

Adam Jensen paced Gray-New Gloucester with 18 points.

Jack Cooleen added six points and nine blocked shots for Falmouth.

SOUTH PORTLAND 53, BIDDEFORD 41: Logan Gaddar and Vukasin Vignjvic each scored 15 points as South Portland won at home.

South Portland outscored Biddeford 14-2 in the second quarter for a 22-9 halftime lead.

The Tigers, behind Robert Cote and Chance Baldino, made a 13-0 run in the third quarter to pull within six.

WAYNFLETE 41, NORTH YARMOUTH ACAD. 40: Alex Hadiaris had three crucial steals late in the fourth quarter to help Waynflete win at Portland.

Chris Burke led a balanced offense for the Flyers with eight points. Hadiaris, Mitch Newlin, Paul Runyambo and Joe Veroneau added six each.

WISCASSET 70, HALL-DALE 45: Ben Ashton and Jordan Jones scored 16 points each to pace Wiscasset at home.

BRUNSWICK 45, OXFORD HILLS 43: Mitchell Black scored with 3.5 seconds left as Brunswick won at home.

WESTBROOK 45, KENNEBUNK 25: Sean Murphy scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter, and the Blue Blazes pulled away at Kennebunk.

GREELY 61, TRAIP ACADEMY 38: Caroline Hamilton scored 16 points and and Mykaela Twitchell added 14 to help Greely win an opener at Cumberland.
