AUGUSTA — Newly released U.S. Census figures show that Maine has the lowest median household income in the region and among the highest child poverty rates.
The statistics found that median household income in Maine was $46,541 during the latter half of the decade.
That figure is about $4,700 less than Vermont, which ranked just above Maine among New England states. Connecticut had the highest median income of the New England states at almost $68,000.
The Bangor Daily News say the figures are from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. It used data from 2005 to 2009.
It found that 13 percent of Maine residents and 16 percent of children were below the poverty level. Only New York had a higher poverty rate. Maine tied with Rhode Island and Pennsylvania.
