CUMBERLAND — Theo Bowe scored a career-high 34 points and Cape Elizabeth forced 24 turnovers Tuesday, pulling away to a 55-41 victory against Greely in a Western Maine Conference boys’ basketball game.
Cape (5-1) handed Greely (5-1) its first loss of the regular season and signaled that Western Class B could be wide open. Cape’s loss was to Yarmouth, a team the Rangers beat handily.

“Taking nothing away from Yarmouth, but against us they shot lights out and we didn’t play well,” said Bowe.
After a close first half and early part of the third quarter, the Capers closed the period with a 7-0 run. Bowe had four from the line.
With the Rangers leading 8-4 early in the game, Cape reeled off nine points in 30 seconds. Bowe converted a three-point play, followed it with a 3-pointer from the corner, and Joey Doane added a 3-pointer on Cape’s next possession.
Cape took advantage of a large foul discrepancy, including going 24 of 31 from the line in the second half.
“We played very poorly,” said Greely Coach Ken Marks. “We weren’t moving our feet on defense and that’s why we got called for so many fouls. Cape is a very good team. They’re quick and they play great defense. We have a lot to work on.”
The Rangers’ big men, Tanner Storey and Michael McDevitt, fouled out in the final four minutes.
Bowe, a 6-foot-1 senior, scored his team’s first 10 points to counter Greely’s fast start. His points were evenly distributed – 15 in the first half and 19 in the second. Fifteen of his points in the second half were from the line.
“Bowe is Bowe,” said Cape Coach Jim Ray. “He’s a pretty good player, isn’t he? He relishes games like these. I suspect defenses are going to change in the way they defend him. That’s why it will be important for our newer players to develop so that when the defense concentrates on Bowe, they will be able to step up.”
Ray cited his three senior starters – Bowe, Doane and Cam Brown – for keeping the team focused.
“Our senior leadership was the key,” said Ray. “They played very well and showed the poise that helped the other guys. The rest of the team got better as the seniors got them to rally as the game went along.”
Cape outscored the Rangers 7-4 to open the fourth quarter and take a 43-31 lead.
Cape scored only one field goal in the fourth; the rest came from the line, where the Capers outscored Greely 19-14 in the period.
Cape outscored Greely 30-20 in the second half.
“We kept our spacing, ran our offense and took the open shots,” said Bowe.
“We didn’t force anything. Winning here is a great feeling. It’s a good win in terms of Heal points and a good win for the team as a whole.”
Doane finished with 11 points for the Capers. Sam Johnston led the Rangers with 12 points and McDevitt, a freshman, had 10.
