BELFAST – The Searsport man accused of holding 11 schoolchildren hostage at gunpoint more than two years ago was found guilty tonight.

Randall Hofland, 57, was found guilty on 38 of 40 criminal charges by a Waldo County jury after four hours of deliberation, the Bangor Daily News reported.

Hofland’s three-week-long trial ended this afternoon, then the jury began deliberations. Hofland acted as his own attorney.

Hofland took a classroom full of students hostage at Stockton Springs Elementary School on Oct. 31, 2008, using a 10 mm Glock handgun.

Hofland was found not guilty of criminally threatening a police officer and of another charge related to a traffic stop.

Hofland had entered pleas of not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity. Now another trial will be held to determine if he was insane.
