PORTLAND — Steve Martin, best known for his comedic abilities, will bring his bluegrass band, the Steep Canyon Rangers, to Merrill Auditorium for a concert on May 18.

Portland Ovations presents the show. Tickets will be available to Portland Ovations’ members and subscribers beginning at noon on Wednesday, and will be available to the public at noon Feb. 7.

Martin has starred, acted or written in many of the most popular comedies of a generation. He’s also written children’s books, plays, novels and an autobiography. Martin is known for his collection of fine art and his excellent skills on the five-string banjo.

He has teamed with the Steep Canyon Rangers only recently. Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers first played together in 2009, and since then have toured together often and made a record, “Rare Bird Alert,” due out March 15.

The Steep Canyon Rangers are a classic string band comprising a guitar, fiddle, upright bass, banjo and mandolin. Martin adds a second banjo and additional vocals making for a unique and exciting sound.

Tickets cost $41 to $59 for members and subscribers. Tickets to the general public cost $45 to $65.
