MEXICO — A Maine lawmaker wants to allow people with one arm to have and carry switchblade knives.

State Rep. Sheryl Briggs of Mexico says such a law would bring Maine into compliance with a federal law that allows individuals with one arm to have switchblades with a blade of 3 inches or less.

Briggs says she was asked to introduce the bill by Mexico Lawyer Paul Dumas Jr., who has one arm.

Under current Maine law it’s a misdemeanor to possess a switchblade, a folding knife with a blade that is spring-assisted or is ejected into the open position.

The Sun Journal newspaper says the bill is being considered by the Legislature’s Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety.

A public hearing on the bill is set for Feb. 11.
