HOUSTON
— A helicopter pilot with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has been indicted for allegedly lying about the 2005 drowning of a Mexican citizen in South Texas.
Forty-one-year-old James Peters has been charged with four counts of making false statements to an investigator.
The person drowned Dec. 14, 2005, near an international bridge in Laredo. The person’s name was not immediately released.
Peters, now stationed in Maine, was indicted last month by a federal grand jury in Houston but his indictment was not unsealed until today, after his arrest.
Prosecutors say Peters lied about the helicopter hovering over two people on a flotation device in the Rio Grande and trying to make the pair “go back.” Investigators say turbulence from the rotor separated one person away from the floating device.
