AUGUSTA — State offices closed today at noon due to the weather.

Legislative hearings had been postponed earlier, and the state court system announced Tuesday it would close today because of the weather.

LePage spokesman Dan Demeritt had said last month that “The rule of thumb is: If Marden’s is open, Maine is open.”

A spot check of several Marden’s stores showed that several were planning to close early. Sanford planned to close at 2 p.m., and the Waterville store said it likely would close by 5 p.m.

Demeritt today said his earlier reference was a “quip” and was meant to convey the governor’s feeling that most times, when the private sector reports to work, so should state employees.

“It has not been formalized in state policy,” he said. “It’s a line that explains in general terms the governor’s position on when the state should be open.”
