OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The town’s  9-1-1 emergency calls and non-emergency dispatch calls will soon be handled by Sanford Regional Communications Center.

Town councilors voted unanimously Tuesday night to transition 9-1-1 emergency calls, which are currently handled by Scarborough, and non-emergency calls, currently handled by Old Orchard Beach dispatchers, to Sanford as a cost savings effort.

The town will sign a five-year contract with Sanford, Town Manager Jack Turcotte said. While the contract will cost the city $300,000 a year, he estimated it will lead to a $135,000 savings annually.
