PORTLAND — An emergency gas leak on Congress Street, near the intersection of Preble Street, will result in the closure of the westbound lane of traffic on Congress within a few minutes.

Nicole Clegg, spokeswoman for the city, said no evacuations are planned, but Unitil needs to close the street at 5 p.m. while it attempts to pinpoint the leak.

Clegg said the westerly lane of Congress Street beginning at Elm Street and ending at Brown Street will be closed. In addition, Preble Street between Cumberland Avenue and Congress Street, will be closed.

Portland police will be on the scene to manage traffic flow. Commuters should seek alternate routes.
