KITTERY  — A long-distance swimmer is raising money for Maine lighthouses by swimming the waters between New Hampshire and Maine – in the dead of winter.

Gary Sredzienski is planning a four-mile swim in the frigid ocean waters between Portsmouth and his hometown of Kittery, with proceeds going to benefit the Maine-based American Lighthouse Foundation and its local chapter, Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses. The event is scheduled for Feb. 26.

Sredzienski will begin his swim in Rye, N.H., with stops at Whaleback and Portsmouth Harbor lighthouses before ending at Kittery Point in Maine.

Lighthouse supporters can donate at the www.lighthousefoundation.org website.

After the swim, Sredzienski – who is an accomplished accordion player – and his band, the Serfs, will play at a Kittery Point restaurant.
