ROXBURY — There’s a brook trout worth $2,000 swimming in Maine’s Roxbury Pond.
The specially tagged, 2-pound fish was stocked Wednesday in anticipation of the 32nd annual Larry Mercier Ice Fishing Derby.
In the 32 years the derby has been held no one has ever legally caught the specially tagged fish.
The Saturday event is the Mexico Lions Club’s major fundraiser to provide eyeglasses for residents of Mexico, Roxbury and Rumford who can’t afford proper eye care.
Former registered Maine guide Jeff Patneaude tells the Sun Journal newspaper the tagged fish is going to head for shallow water. He says if it’s caught, it will be caught in three to six feet of water.
Last year, more than 500 people took part in the derby.
