FORT KENT — Lowell Bailey spent much of Saturday night kicking himself for forgetting half his bullets, a mistake that cost him a spot in today’s 15-kilometer mass start.

This morning he was pinching himself.

Bailey slipped into the field this morning after three athletes scratched, then knocked down 18 of 20 targets to finish a career-best 9th, only 38.3 seconds behind winner Martin Fourcade of France.

Tomasz Sikora of Poland was second and Tarjei Boe of Norway third this morning at the 10th Mountain Ski Center.

Certain that Bailey wouldn’t compete today, his parents left early this morning to return home to Lake Placid, N.Y.
