Ella Butts, 10, is among about 100 students at Portland’s Longfellow Elementary School who spent Monday afternoon jumping rope to raise money for the American Heart Association. Teams of students from the third, fourth and fifth grades took turns jumping rope for nearly 90 minutes. Assistant Principal Chris Bearce, who is also a physical education instructor, said “Jump Rope for Heart” has been an annual event at Longfellow since it was established in 1983. Last year, students raised more than $7,000. They were hoping to raise even more this year. Bearce said it will take a few days for the total amount raised to be tallied.
