PORTLAND — Scores of job-seekers turned out at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Friday, looking to land jobs at the Renys department store that will open on Congress Street next month.

The company plans to hire 30 to 40 full- and part-timers for the store, said Mary Kate Reny, an official with the Newcastle-based retail chain.

Renys plans to open the store at 540-544 Congress St., where the L.L. Bean outlet and an Olympia Sports store operated until last year. It will be Renys 15th store and its first ever in Portland.

About two dozen applicants were waiting in line before the job fair officially started at 9 a.m., so company officials opened up about 15 minutes early. Store managers were there to answer questions and provide information as job candidates dropped off resumes and filled out applications.

Reny has said that the jobs will pay more than minimum wage. The full-time jobs and some of the part-time jobs will include benefits like 401(k) plans and health and dental insurance.

The Portland store will be open daily except for Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter, she said.

The new site will have about 22,000 square feet of retail space and will open in mid-April.

Renys employs about 450 people and hires more workers for the summer and the holiday season.
