RUMFORD — The Rumford police chief is warning voters that cuts to the department’s budget will mean fewer services for residents of the Maine town.
Chief Stacy Carter told selectmen that to retain the current service level, the budget had to include an increase of $33,240 over the current year, to a total of $836,670.
A budget with no increase could mean police wouldn’t be able to provide school crossing guards a four-corner intersection, further reducing dispatching hours, possibly not keeping the station open as much to the public and reducing training.
Carter says he’s against reducing patrol personnel. There are times when only two officers are patrolling. He calls it “unfathomable” to consider going to one person.
The Sun Journal says further cuts could mean eliminating a detective’s position.
