SCARBOROUGH — The Board of Education votes tonight on whether George Entwistle III will become the next leader of the school district.

Entwistle, a former Falmouth superintendent, emerged as the board’s choice following a national search. About 20 people applied for the position, and a community screening committee narrowed the field and made its recommendations to the board, said Christopher Brownsey, chairman of the school board.

“We enthusiastically bring Dr. Entwistle forward for appointment. The board cites his strong leadership, educational vision and community outreach with this recommendation,” Brownsey said in a statement.

Entwistle would earn a salary of $132.000.

Entwistle is now superintendent in Belmont, Mass. He was Falmouth’s superintendent for five years before that and had been assistant superintendent in MSAD 28 in the Camden-Rockport area.

Entwistle holds a doctorate in education from Boston University. In addition to his work in education, Entwistle has worked in mental health services and business.

The previous superintendent, David Doyle, retired in October. Assistant Superintendent Jo Anne Sizemore has been serving as the interim superintendent since then. She continues in that role through the end of June and then returns to her previous position.
