BANGOR — A judge is going to decide whether a Newport man is competent to stand trial in the shooting death of his father.

The jury was selected yesterday for the murder trial of 46-year-old Perley Goodrich Jr.

After the jury was chosen, a hearing was held to determine if Goodrich can stand trial in the death of his father, Perley Goordich Sr.

Superior Court Justice William Anderson said he’d issue his decision on Tuesday.

Goodrich has pleaded not guilty and not criminally responsible by reason of insanity to intentional or knowing murder in the Oct. 26, 2009 shooting in Newport.

The Bangor Daily News says that at Monday’s hearing, an expert witness said Goodrich suffers from anxiety, but he is capable of standing trial.

The trial could begin next week.
