BANGOR — The trial of a Maine man charged with attacking his mother and killing his father is under way following a judge’s decision that the defendant is competent to stand trial.

Lawyers for 46-year-old Perley Goodrich Jr. are using an insanity defense in his murder trial, which got under way today in Penobscot County Superior Court in Bangor.

His mother testified she took him to the hospital on the two days before the killing. She says he was given medication the first day. The next day, he was transferred to a mental health facility before checking himself out.

The Bangor Daily News says Sandra Goodrich testified her husband’s last words were “he shot me, he shot me” on Oct. 26, 2009. Goodrich was arrested after a four-day manhunt in Newport.
