KENNEBUNK — Katherine Paulson, who was fatally shot by a police officer Sunday, died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the state Medical Examiner’s Office.

Paulson, 39, was shot by an officer responding to a report of a domestic disturbance at her home at 16 Nottingham Court. Officer Joshua Morneau shot and killed Paulson when she confronted him with a weapon, according to police. Details such as the type of weapon and the nature of the domestic disturbance were not released.

No other information will be available until the state Attorney General’s Office completes its report. The Attorney General’s Office investigates all uses of deadly force by police and determines whether they are justified.

Morneau and Sgt. Juliet Gilman, who was also at Paulson’s home at the time of the shooting, remain on leave, according to Kennebunk Police Lt. Anthony Bean Burpee.

The department expects to begin its own investigation into whether department policies and procedures were followed in the next week or two, he said.
