AUGUSTA — A bill to let Peaks Island secede from Portland and form its own town has been killed by the Maine Legislature.
The State and Local Government Committee voted unanimously to reject the bill. Four years ago a similar bill was narrowly defeated.
Peaks Island is the most populated island in Casco Bay. It’s about three miles from the mainland and has a year-round population of fewer than 1,000 people. The bill would have allowed Peaks, along with House, Pumpkin Knob and Catnip islands to secede.
Supporters said Peaks Island contributes more money to Portland than residents are getting from the city.
The State and Local Government Committee also killed bills allowing four-year instead of two-year terms for lawmakers, and to prohibit Maine’s constitutional officers from endorsing candidates for Legislature.
