BANGOR — Contract negotiations between nurses and the administration of the Eastern Maine Medical Center are set in hopes the two sides can avoid another one-day nurses strike, set for next week.

If talks fail today, hospital administrators say they will bring in replacement nurses for five days, May 5-9.

Prior to a one-day strike last November, the hospital locked out the regular nurses for two days.

The nurses have said the hospital’s adamant refusal to include staffing language and other key issues in the new contract undermines patient safety and erodes job satisfaction.

The Bangor Daily News says the hospital counters nurses are pushing a “national agenda” set by out-of-state organizers rather than seeking local solutions.

The 830 Bangor nurses have been working without a contract since September.
